Natural gas advanced metering involves the installation of state-of-the-art metering technology for DTE Energy’s residential and commercial natural gas and electric customers.

Meter upgrades

To implement this program, your natural gas meter will have a small transmitter installed behind the existing meter face, so your existing natural gas meter will not look any different.  

These transmitters are extremely safe and highly accurate. They use secure, low-power radio-transmissions to encrypt your natural gas usage information and send that information to a meter reader who would either be walking nearby or driving down your street. The meter readers will carry a special device that allows them to receive this data. This creates a much more efficient meter reading process.

Advanced metering benefits you

The installation of your advanced meter reading transmitter enables us to provide the following benefits:

• Nearly eliminating the need for us to enter your yard or business for meter reading, except for occasional maintenance.
• This means you will no longer be responsible for removing obstructions to your meter, such a snow, on a regular basis.
• No need to worry about securing pets or other animals when you meter is being read.
• Fewer estimated bills.

Installations

We do not need to interrupt your service to complete these upgrades unless a new natural gas meter is required.

We have partnered with Itron to provide the equipment and help implement the program in Southeastern Michigan. In communities in Northern and Northwestern Michigan, MichCon field crews will complete natural gas meter upgrades.
