The following steps are used as an overview to help you through the interconnection process for Category 1. To obtain more detailed information, please view the detailed interconnection requirements section of the Web site.
- Starting the Interconnection Process:
- Customer: Let us know that you wish to interconnect an electric generating system by contacting the interconnection hotline at 313.235.4333 or at e-mail.
- Detroit Edison: We will provide access to a highly qualified engineer to help you through your entire process. All documents, forms and applications required to complete the process may be found on our Web site.
- Completing the Interconnection Application:
- Customer: Complete and submit the standard Interconnection Application to the name and address on the form. A completed application consists of: (1) all required data fields filled in and (2) a filing fee*.
- Customer: At this point you may defer reviewing or review the rate option section of the web site to determine the best applicable rate option for your needs. If you qualify for and choose to select net metering as your rate, please check the boxes related to net metering on the combined interconnection and net metering application and submit the $100 combined application fee to Detroit Edison.
- Detroit Edison: We will send a letter/e-mail, within ten (10) business days, acknowledging our receipt of your application and notifying you that your application is complete or informing you if any portion of the application or interconnection data is incomplete or missing. Incomplete applications will be returned with the deficiencies clearly identified and may be resubmitted when complete. We will also send you a checklist with all the items that must be completed prior to operating in parallel. The application filing fee* must be received by Detroit Edison before we can move forward with the application review.
- Application Review:
- Detroit Edison: Will review of your application and we will send you a letter/e-mail within ten (10) business days from receipt of your completed application, notifying you that the application review is completed allowing you to proceed with installation (not operation), or informing you that an engineering review is required.
-
Customer: Once you receive your application review complete letter, if you have not already done so, review the rate options section of the Web site to determine the best applicable rate for your needs. If you qualify for and choose to select net metering as your rate, please submit a net metering application and $25 application fee to Detroit Edison.

- Engineering Review:
- Detroit Edison: We will determine the parameters of the Engineering Review Study and inform you when we receive the waiver from the MPSC. After receiving the waiver from the MPSC, we will perform the study to determine the impact of your project on our electric distribution system. We will determine if any system modifications are required for safe and reliable interconnection of your project. We will inform you of the Engineering Review results and potential impacts to your schedule or project. We will make the necessary system modifications and approve your application allowing you to proceed with installation (not operation).
- Parallel Operating Agreement:
- Detroit Edison: The Parallel Operating Agreement (POA) will cover contractual issues such as, design, testing, maintenance, operation, modification of facilities, rate information, defaults, remedies, and liability. The customer checklist must be completed and a POA (available on the Web site) must be fully executed through signature of both parties prior to your project operating in parallel with the Detroit Edison system. At this time, Detroit Edison will also need to obtain proof of an electrical inspection by the appropriate city/township.
- Customer: Review, sign and return the applicable POA and customer checklist. Also, send Detroit Edison proof of your city/township electrical inspection. Upon utility receiving all materials, contact the appropriate DTE Energy representative (you may also call 313.235.4333) following your installation to perform the customer generation site verification.
