The Michigan Jobs & Energy Coalition Helping to Safeguard Michigan’s Energy Future

The Michigan Jobs and Energy Coalition (MJEC) played a pivotal role in passing the 2008 comprehensive energy package that is helping to revitalize Michigan’s economy, is diversifying the state’s energy portfolio, is saving customers money and is providing utilities the certainty needed to plan for the state’s future energy requirements. The MJEC continues to stand strong behind the energy package because some businesses and policymakers are working to change those laws, which would NOT be in the long-term interests of electric customers or the state.

Formed in 2008, the MJEC supports the timely implementation of the energy laws, the construction of new base load power plants and renewable energy facilities and energy policies that create jobs and improve Michigan’s economy.

The Laws Provide Clear Benefits to Families, Businesses and State

The laws served as the catalyst for popular Energy Optimization programs and equipment rebates, and promotion of renewable energy technologies such as solar and wind. The laws also provide for competition in Michigan’s electricity market while giving utilities certainty to make major infrastructure investments*. In fact, Since the 2008 comprehensive energy policy was enacted, the state’s two biggest utilities – DTE Energy and Consumers Energy – have invested more than $4 billion in the state.

Residential and business energy efficiency programs saved DTE Energy customers $125 million from 2009-2011. In terms of renewable energy, DTE Energy is on its way to meeting the target established by the 2008 laws – 10% of its sales being met by renewable sources. In addition, the law capped the Electric Choice Program at 10% of electricity sales.
