In October 2008,the Clean, Renewable and Efficiency Energy Act (PA 295)* was passed into law encouraging the development of renewable energy projects in Michigan.
On March 4, 2009 Detroit Edison filed its plan to meet the state’s goals. The MPSC approved the plan on June 2, and will conduct annual reviews of our progress.
Under the approved plan, Detroit Edison plans to substantially increase our investments in renewable energy through 2029 on the following:
- 550-600 MW of utility-scale wind farms. If the turbines are 2 MW each, this would mean building about 280 turbines at an approximate cost of $2 billion.
- 20 MW of solar energy through the SolarCurrentsTM program.
- 600 MW of renewable energy from third parties in Michigan, for a total planned expenditure of approximately $3.5 billion over the 20 year program.
The overall pace of investment will be driven by annual targets, cost caps in the legislation and economic factors.
Many activities are underway to implement Detroit Edison’s renewable energy plan. For further information on our renewable energy projects, as well as supplier and consumer opportunities to become involved with renewable energy, see the links at the left.
