Because of the availability of wind in Michigan and the availability of commercially proven wind turbines, wind power will make up the majority of our renewable portfolio in the future.
Our primary focus for wind energy development is in Huron County, in Michigan's Thumb region. Detroit Edison potentially could invest more than $1 billion in wind power projects in Michigan’s Thumb region. Project development will take upwards of 2-3 years depending on permitting requirements, electrical system needs, possible environmental impacts, and the needs of the local community. All development will be handled in accordance with PA 295 and with oversight from the Michigan Public Service Commission.
We are also investigating the potential for wind energy projects in other areas of the state, and assessing development of solar energy projects in Michigan as well.
