Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) represent proof that electricity was generated from an eligible renewable energy resource. The issuance or purchase of RECs offsets the generation of emissions that factor into climate change, and provide the financial incentive for development of new renewable energy sources.
DTE Energy offers two methods for Michigan customers to engage in the generation of RECs for clean energy.
SolarCurrentsTM
Under the new SolarCurrents program, customers who install small (<20 kW) solar photovoltaic systems can sell the RECs allocated to that renewable resource to Detroit Edison. Detroit Edison provides a substantial prepayment upon installation, and a monthly credit on the utility bill for 20 years.
GreenCurrentsSM
The GreenCurrents program allows customers the option to elect to pay a little more on their electricity bills in order to encourage the development of renewable energy sources in Michigan. The purchase of RECs by DTE Energy and others has so far enabled the construction of four wind farms and biomass energy plants in Michigan.
