The Time-of-Day rate is a rate option that allows you to take advantage of a lower electric price during a specified time period of the day. If your monthly electric bill is $140 or higher, you may automatically save money on your electricity just by being on the Time-of-Day electric rate. Plus, if you conserve electricity during the day, your savings may increase!

Considerations:

  1. Most economical for customers who currently spend an average of $140 or more for electricity each month and use a relatively small portion (25% or less) of their electricity during on-peak hours.
  2. Customers who select this rate must qualify for the Residential Service rate D1.

How it Works

The rate includes two prices for power - on-peak, when customers use more electricity and off-peak, when customers use less. A special meter monitors your electric consumption during the on-peak and off-peak hours. The Time-of-Day Service Rate is available on an optional basis. You may switch to other electric rates offered by Detroit Edison at any time.

With the Time-of-Day rate your savings could potentially be over $500* per year. Plus, if you reduce the amount of electricity you use during the day, your savings can increase!

Conserve electricity and maximize your savings

During on-peak hours, you can increase your savings by minimizing the use of electric powered household appliances. You save money and you'll be doing your part to help protect the environment. Here are some easy ways to use less electricity:

  • Increase the temperature on your air-conditioning
  • Wait to operate your dishwasher and laundry appliances during off-peak hours
  • Turn off lights, television and computer equipment when not in use.

During off-peak hours, you may resume to your ordinary electric consumption behavior. The electric meter will monitor the consumption during the on-peak and off-peak hours.

It's easy to start saving

First, do some quick math to verify the Time of Day Rate is a cost-effective choice for you.  Check your prior 12-month electric consumption history.  You can easily find that information online by accessing your Annual Comparison Report.   If your average monthly usage is equal to or greater than 1400 kWh, you will benefit from the Time-of-Day electric rate.

You can also enroll by calling  800.477.4747.  Ask for the Time-of-Day electric rate (D1.2). A representative will arrange for the installation of the meter so  you can start saving on your electricity.
