What is Smart Circuit?
The Smart Circuit project involves upgrading electrical equipment, installing a communication network, and a centralized control system. The communication network will transmit information from the new advanced electrical equipment to the central control system at DTE Energy
The goal of the Smart Circuit program is to provide DTE Energy with a real-time, complete and connected picture of the electrical distribution system (poles, wires, circuits, and substations). This will enable us to provide more reliable electrical service for customers.
DTE Energy is taking its first steps towards that goal by installing smart circuit technology on 55 circuits at 11 substations.
When the project is complete, this new hardware and software will give us the ability to remotely monitor and control parts of the electrical system. This includes the capability to:
- Pinpoint problems and restore power to customers experiencing outages more quickly. We’ll also be able to more effectively validate when electricity has been restored.
- Detect system damage and re-route power from nearby undamaged circuits. This will minimize the impact of outages on customers.
More accurate, integrated information will also allow us to operate our system more efficiently.
