Clothes Washers
The average American family washes almost 400 loads of laundry each year. It’s a good thing families can cut their related energy costs by more than a third—and the water costs by more than half—just by purchasing a clothes washer with the ENERGY STAR label. Over the life of your new ENERGY STAR qualified washer, you’ll save enough money in operating costs to pay for the matching dryer. With your water savings, you could fill three backyard swimming pools.
DTE Energy’s Your Energy SavingsSM program is offering mail-in rebates of $25 to $50 for qualified ENERGY STAR Clothes Washers. Download the rebate form*.

Energy Efficient Shower Heads
Shower yourself with savings. DTE Energy’s Your Energy Savings program offers $10 in-store rebate coupons on qualified energy efficient shower heads at selected ACE Hardware stores.
Before 1992, some shower heads had flow rates of 5.5 gallons per minute (gpm)—that’s 3 gpm more than a new 2.5 gpm shower head. Replacing older, less efficient shower heads with new, energy efficient shower heads is an inexpensive upgrade that can save you water and money.
How much of a difference can it make? Well, a 10-minute shower with an energy efficient shower head uses about 25 gallons of water, saving you 5 gallons of water over a typical bath. That’s right—a 10-minute shower can use less water than a full bath!
Not sure if your shower head needs replacement? Here's a quick test:
-
- Place a bucket—marked in gallon increments—under your shower head.
- Turn on the shower at the normal water pressure you use.
- Time how many seconds it takes to fill the bucket to the 1-gallon (3.8 liter) mark.
If it takes less than 20 seconds to reach the 1-gallon mark, you could benefit from an energy efficient shower head.

Programmable Thermostats
Did you know that properly using a programmable thermostat in your home is one of the easiest ways you can save energy and money? An ENERGY STAR qualified programmable thermostat helps make it easy for you to save by offering four preprogrammed settings to regulate your home’s temperature in both summer and winter, and when you are asleep or away.
Homeowners can save about $180 a year by properly setting their programmable thermostats and maintaining those settings. The preprogrammed settings that come with ENERGY STAR qualified programmable thermostats are intended to deliver savings without sacrificing comfort. Depending on your family’s schedule, you can see significant savings by sticking with those settings or adjust them as appropriate for your family.

ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Its purpose is to help us all save money and protect the environment through researching and promoting the use of energy-efficient products and practices.
Results are already adding up. With the help of ENERGY STAR, Americans saved enough energy in 2008 alone to avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 29 million cars—all while saving $19 billion on their utility bills.
The next time you’re looking for new household products, look for the blue ENERGY STAR label. This symbol means the product or service meets strict energy efficiency guidelines set by EPA and DOE.
