Smart Control, Convenience and Savings

Smart thermostats make it easy and convenient for you to manage your home energy use. Adjusting your thermostat from a smartphone app and programing a schedule to match your household routines gives you more control of energy use whether you're home or away.

Participants in Smart Savers also save by agreeing to allow DTE to make brief, limited thermostat adjustments during high electric demand that can occur on especially hot days. It's easy and risk-free:

Events will occur only on weekdays (no holidays) for up to four hours between 12 p.m. - 8 p.m. Some events may include a slight adjustment to pre-cool your home or business prior to the start of the event.

You can anticipate up to 56 event hours from June 1 through September 30.

During an event, your thermostat will never be adjusted by more than four degrees from your current setpoint.

You may be notified the day before an event begins. You can opt out at any time from your mobile device or by simply adjusting your smart thermostat back to your desired comfort level.

Getting Started

Already have a smart thermostat? Please see eligible smart thermostats to check if your smart thermostat is eligible to be enrolled in the program.

If you don't currently have a smart thermostat, you can find eligible models and discounts in the DTE Marketplace.

After installing and activating your new smart thermostat, click the Enroll Now button.

Once your eligibility is confirmed by DTE, you'll be enrolled in the program. You'll receive an email notification about your eligibility status.

Am I Eligible?

You may be eligible for Smart Savers if you're a DTE residential or small commercial business electric customer in good standing with in-home Wi-Fi, central air conditioning and an eligible smart thermostat.

Own multiple homes? Each qualifying smart thermostat must be enrolled separately.

If you have a second, separately metered service, like the CoolCurrents rate, or participate in the SmartCurrents program, you are not eligible for Smart Savers.

How Natural Gas Balance Works

Participation in Natural Gas Balance is voluntary. If you are a DTE residential or small business natural gas customer and your account is in good standing, you are eligible to enroll in the program. You can enter or leave at any time and you may change your level of participation once per month.

During enrollment, you select one of four participation levels. The levels represent offsetting all or some percentage of natural gas usage in an average Michigan household.

How Smart Savers Works

Enroll Your Thermostat

After you've installed an eligible smart thermostat, the Enroll Now function takes you to your smart thermostat's enrollment site. You'll follow a few simple steps to enroll.

Save and Earn

Earn a $50 bill credit by staying enrolled through September 30 and participating in events throughout the season.

You're In Control

Your participation in adjustment events is voluntary and risk-free. You'll always have ultimate control, and you can opt out of an event at any time, for any reason.

Our Commitment

Smart Savers is designed to help you save money and ease demand on the grid. The program contributes to our commitment to sustaining and improving grid reliability in times of high energy demand, like during a heat wave.

Smart Savers also reflects our commitment to promote home energy efficiency and savings. Your smart thermostat gives you control to manage your household heating and cooling to save money and energy.

Want to unenroll?

If you decide you want to leave Smart Savers, begin the unenrollment process here. Unenrolling from the program will end your participation for all your enrolled thermostats.

Smart Savers Incentives

You'll receive a $50 bill credit by staying enrolled in Smart Savers through September 30 and allowing adjustment events. You must enroll in the program by September 1 and participate in at least one announced event.

DTE may end the annual incentive at any time.

Your participation in the program helps reduce stress on the energy grid and energy costs during periods of high electricity demand and extraordinary situations. That helps ensure reliability of energy delivery and protects our environment by lowering emissions.

Through programs like Smart Savers and advanced technologies, we are helping our customers reduce their emissions up to 35% by 2050. Everyday energy savings combined with high demand reductions and strategies help us maintain energy grid reliability. We are committed to Net Zero Emissions by 2050.

Temperature Adjustments

At the start of an event, your thermostat will be automatically adjusted up to four degrees above your current temperature setpoint. The adjustment will typically last no more than four hours between 12 p.m. - 8 p.m. Adjustments will not occur on summer holidays (Independence Day and Labor Day).

Your thermostat may be adjusted by up to two degrees below your current temperature setpoint to pre-cool your home or business before an event.

Once the temperature adjustment is over, your thermostat will return to its normal set point or programmed schedule.

You can anticipate at least one event, and up to 56 event hours, from June 1 through September 30.

You will be notified prior to the start of an event through email, your mobile thermostat application or your connected thermostat device.

No. Adjustment events only affect the temperature setpoint by a few degrees, for up to four hours at a time, with minimal impact to comfort. If you are ever uncomfortable during an event, you can opt out at any time.

Your participation is voluntary. You can opt out of an event at any time from your mobile device or thermostat.

You can opt out of the pre-cool. But, when you opt out of the pre-cool, most smart thermostats, besides ecobee, also opt you out of the following adjustment event.

Program Commitments

Smart Savers is voluntary and risk-free. Once you are enrolled in the program there are no obligations to stay enrolled.

By allowing thermostat adjustments throughout the summer season, you will earn a $50 bill credit annually if you enroll by September 1, participate in at least one adjustment event, and stay enrolled through September 30.

If you decide to leave the program, send an email to dte@energyhub.com requesting to end your participation in the DTE Smart Savers program. By leaving the program you will end your participation for all of your enrolled thermostats.
