Natural Gas Choice

You Have a Choice

Michigan residents and businesses have a choice in natural gas providers.

While DTE is responsible for billing natural gas customers located in our service area, we might not be your gas supplier. You can get your gas from an alternative gas supplier (AGS).

How Gas Gets to Your Home or Business

Gas can be supplied by DTE or by an Alternative Gas Supplier (AGS).

DTE will deliver the gas regardless of the supplier. DTE is responsible for billing, which includes delivery of the gas, infrastructure maintenance costs, metering and gas use charges.

The Bills Look a Little Different

Gas bills have a slightly different look depending on whether your gas is supplied by an Alternative Gas Supplier or by DTE.

If your bill lists Alternative Gas Supplier Charges, DTE Energy is your natural gas delivery company and an Alternative Gas Supplier is your natural gas commodity supplier.

If your gas bill lists a Gas Cost Recovery charge, DTE Energy is both your natural gas delivery company and supplier. DTE Energy's current gas cost recovery rate is $0.365 per CCF.

Facts to Consider About Natural Gas Suppliers

Regardless of whom you select as your natural gas supplier, DTE will continue to be the reliable energy provider you trust to deliver natural gas to your home, read your meter and respond to emergencies.

Cost Efficiency

DTE buys gas in volume during the summer months, when prices are lower. The gas is stored underground in our vast network of storage wells, ensuring an ample supply at affordable prices throughout the year.

At-Price Natural Gas

As a regulated energy company, DTE charges only the cost of natural gas, with no markup. Your cost for gas changes only when the cost changes for us to buy gas.

Regulated Rates

DTE Energy’s rates are regulated by the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC). Alternative gas supplier rates are not.

Tips: Choosing a Natural Gas Supplier

Compare Natural Gas Prices

Visit the MPSC website to compare rates and see a list of suppliers participating in the Gas Customer Choice Program. Customers returning to DTE from an alternative gas supplier are required to remain with DTE for at least 12 months.

Lock-in Your Account

If you’re happy with your DTE gas service or alternative gas supplier, you can choose to lock-in your account. Our lock-in feature stops anyone from changing your gas supplier without your consent. Simply call DTE at (800) 477-4747 and ask to lock-in your supplier. Once activated, your account cannot be switched to another gas supplier unless you call DTE and request to remove the lock. This is a free service.

Beware of Scams

DTE and its affiliates, including DTE Gas, do not engage in telemarketing or door-to-door sales. Additionally, DTE is not affiliated or associated with any alternative gas suppliers.
