What Counts as a Custom Project

A custom project is an energy efficiency improvement that isn't on our list of available prescriptive measures. These are typically process improvements that save energy. Some projects, like fuel switching and on-site generation, are excluded from the custom rebate program.

Frequently Asked Questions about Custom Rebates

A custom project is an energy-saving improvement that you apply for and get approved by DTE. These are typically process improvements that reduce energy use through better system efficiency.

DTE commercial and industrial customers in good standing qualify. You must install your project at a facility that DTE serves, and it must create a permanent reduction in energy use through increased system efficiency.

Custom rebates cover up to 75% of your eligible project costs. Annual limits apply: Up to $2,000,000 for electricity and $500,000 for natural gas per customer.

Projects that reduce energy use without improving system efficiency don't qualify. Internal labor costs can't be included in project costs.

We calculate savings using industry-accepted engineering methods, including detailed calculations, equipment metering or calibrated building energy modeling. Your Energy Advisor will help you through this step.

Yes. Custom and prescriptive rebates can be combined on the same measure. Talk to your Energy Advisor about the best approach for your project.

Connect with a DTE Energy Advisor before you start your project or application. Most custom projects require metering and verification and we are happy to assist. Call (855) 748-2525 or email saveenergy@dteenergy.com.

You can apply for both electric and natural gas rebates if your project saves both. Each fuel type has its own annual rebate limit.
