Identity Theft

Protect Your Energy Account and Billing & Payment Information

Identity theft occurs when someone deliberately uses another's personal identifying information, such as their name, social security number, driver’s license, or credit card number without their permission, to commit fraud or other crimes.

Identity thieves are always on the hunt for personal identifying information, including information that will help them access your energy account. DTE Energy takes every precaution to protect your personal information by asking several questions when we speak with you to confirm your account, and we urge you to be diligent in protecting your personal information.

Do you know how to recognize an imposter?

DTE will never contact you directly and ask for personal information such as:

  • Your DTE Energy online account User ID or password
  • Your credit card or bank User ID or password
  • Your full Social Security, driver’s license, state ID or passport number

Do you suspect your personal information has been unlawfully used to do business with us?

Please follow the DTE Energy Identity Theft Reporting Instructions and submit your documents by emailing creditspecialist2@dteenergy.com or upload them to our Documentation Submission Portal. If you need further assistance, please call DTE Customer Service at (800) 477-4747.
