Geothermal Systems

Tap Into Earth to Heat and Cool Your Home

Save Money
As you Save the Earth

Geothermal systems not only give home and business owners the satisfaction of doing their part in building a cleaner energy future, they also save them money on heating and cooling costs every month, rain or shine.

Geothermal Benefits

Economical

Everyday, geothermal systems save home and business owners 30 to 60 percent on their heating or cooling costs.

Environmentally Friendly

No fuel, no emissions. Take advantage of the organic energy stored in the earth.

Value

Not only does a geothermal system assist with heating and cooling, it also contributes to water heating.

Efficient

Geothermal systems are as much as four times more efficient than conventional systems.

How Geothermal Systems Work

Geothermal Cooling
As outdoor temperatures rise, a geothermal heat pump collects the unwanted heat in your home or business and moves it to the cooler earth, while collecting the cooler underground air and distributing it throughout the home or business. Conventional heat pumps and air conditioners exhaust that heat outside, causing conventional cooling systems to work harder and less efficiently.

Geothermal Heating
As outdoor temperatures fall, a geothermal heat pump draws air from below the earth’s surface where temps are consistently 55-60 degrees, condenses the heat to raise the temperature, and then moves it throughout your home or business. Conventional heat pumps collect heat from frigid winter air, making them less efficient. Unlike a furnace, geothermal units don’t create heat through combustion. They simply collect the heat and move it.

Geothermal Savings

For more savings opportunities, visit the Department of Energy’s website to learn about how you can take advantage of the 26% Federal Tax Credit and other credits available through the Rural Energy for America program.

Geothermal Energy Rate

DTE Energy supports the adoption of geothermal systems with exclusive geothermal rate options. These business and residential rates are structured as a time of day rates which offer a lower energy price during Off-Peak hours—16 hours on weekdays and all weekend hours and different pricing in the Summer than in the Winter. The geothermal rate options could save home and business owners up to 35% off the standard residential and general business service rates.

Items Measured on the Geothermal Meter

Your Geothermal Rate will be applied for energy used by your geothermal unit, fans, Electronically Commutated Motor (ECM) blower motors, electric water heater, electric resistance heat and well pump (open loop geothermal system only).

Get Started

Begin the process by emailing your name, and a brief description of your request to NBREQUEST_Account@dteenergy.com or click here to submit a request. A DTE Energy expert will respond to your request within 2 business days. In the meantime please complete and sign the second page of the DTE load sheet so we can determine if your existing electrical equipment is suitable to handle your new geothermal system.

Find a local contractor nearest you at Michigan Geothermal Energy Association. Wiring for the D1.7 geothermal advanced meter must be installed by a licensed, independent electrical contractor.
