Protecting your personal information is a top priority. That's why we're introducing new security features to make it easier and more secure to create a profile, sign in and manage your sign-in options.
What you may need to do:
|
The first time you sign in to the new experience, we’ll ask you to create a new password to help keep your profile secure.
New security features, like multi-factor authentication and passkeys, provide easier, more secure ways to sign in to your profile.
Your account number, billing information and utility service will remain the same.
We want to make sure you’re aware of upcoming security enhancements so you know what to expect and any actions you may need to take.
We’re introducing new security features — multi-factor authentication and passkeys — to help prevent unauthorized access to your profile and make signing in easier.
To help protect your profile, we may occasionally ask you to verify your identity when signing in or making changes. Your first verification code will be sent to the email address you use to sign in. After that, you'll be asked to add a phone number to receive future verification codes by text or phone call. You can also add a phone number from My Profile & Preferences after the upgrade to skip email verification.
A passkey lets you sign in without a password by using your device's security features, such as face recognition, your fingerprint or the PIN you use to unlock your device. It can help make signing in both easier and more secure.
In addition to using multi-factor authentication and passkeys, taking a few extra precautions can help protect your personal information.
We're upgrading our digital experience to help better protect your profile and personal information while making it easier to securely access your account information online.
For your security, you’ll be asked to create a new password when you first sign in to the new experience starting December 7.
You will still sign in with the same email but will need to create a new password when you first sign in to the new experience starting December 7. When doing this, we’ll ask you to enter a one-time code sent to your email as an additional verification step to help protect your online profile.
After you’ve set your new password, you can continue signing in with your email and password.
As part of our digital security upgrade, we may ask you to verify your email address so we can confirm it's really you accessing your profile or making changes.
You'll need access to the email address you use to sign in so we can send verification codes when needed to help protect your profile. If you're using an old email address that you can no longer access, please update it in My Profile & Preferences by December 3.
You may need to verify your email and update your profile information before you can sign in. Please make sure the email on your DTE profile is one you can access by December 3. You can change it in My Profile & Preferences.
If you’re unable to update your contact information, contact us for help.
When you first sign in to the new experience starting December 7, you'll be asked to create a new password — so you won’t need to remember your old one. If you ever forget your password, you can use the Forgot password option.
Yes. The updated security features apply across DTE's digital experiences, which will include the DTE Energy and DTE Insight apps.
Multi-factor authentication adds an extra step to help verify your identity and protect your online profile.
With the security upgrade, DTE is applying a form of multi-factor authentication called "adaptive" multi-factor authentication, which asks for additional verification when needed, such as when there's unusual sign-in activity. This provides stronger protection for your profile while making sign-in more secure and convenient.
We’re using adaptive multi-factor authentication, which means you’ll only have to verify your identity in some situations, such as when you sign in from a new device or location. Most of the time, you’ll sign in as usual because adaptive multi-factor authentication helps verify it’s you.
If you sign in with a passkey, you won’t be asked to enter a verification code because your passkey already confirmed your identity.
Yes. After the security upgrade, if you rather receive your adaptive multi-factor verification codes through a text message or phone call, you can add your phone number from My Profile & Preferences > Security > Multi-factor authentication.
Yes. To help provide stronger protection, we’ll automatically apply adaptive multi-factor authentication to your profile starting December 7. Your first verification code will be sent to the email address you use to sign in. After that, you'll be asked to add a phone number to receive future verification codes by text or phone call. You can also add a phone number from My Profile & Preferences > Security > Multi-factor authentication after the upgrade to skip email verification.
Passkeys are a secure and convenient way to sign in to your DTE profile without a password. They make signing in easier by using the security features already built into your phone, computer or other device — such as your fingerprint, face or the PIN used to unlock your device — to verify your identity.
Passkeys are designed to help protect against fraud attempts — including phishing attacks, password theft and other common security risks.
You can still use a password as a backup sign-in method, but it’s not required if you use a passkey.
Many modern smartphones, tablets, laptops and desktop browsers support passkeys. Device compatibility may vary.
If your device supports passkeys, you'll see the option to set one up. If not, you can continue signing in with your password.
Yes. Depending on your device and settings, you may be able to create or synchronize passkeys across multiple trusted devices.
