How to take control of your home's winter heating bill

Understand and monitor your winter energy use

Winter heating can account for about 50% of your monthly energy bill, which is why your costs are higher during the coldest months of the year. No matter how you heat your home, understanding what's behind your bill is the first step to saving more.

What's driving your high winter costs

Why gas costs can rise in winter

If you use a natural gas furnace or boiler to heat your home, your gas usage increases as temperatures drop. When your usage goes up, the gas distribution and gas cost recovery charges on your gas bill also rise.

Why electricity costs can rise in winter

Cold temperatures push electricity usage higher as heating systems work harder and run longer to keep you comfortable. On the electric portion of your bill, charges are broken down by power supply — which is the cost to generate energy — and delivery, which is the cost to get power to your home. These numbers will go up and down with your usage.

How your gas supplier affects your bill

As a natural gas customer, you can choose your own gas supplier, which can affect the rate you pay. Check the Summary of Charges on your bill to see if you’re using a supplier other than DTE. You’ll see what you’re paying compared with our rate, so you can make the right decision for your budget.

Did you know? Space heaters use a lot of electricity. To use them safely and efficiently, close doors to contain heat and power it off when you leave the room.
